Common Causes of Heel Pain in Women

Plantar fasciitis is the leading cause of heel pain in the US. Excessive wear and tear on the band of tissue underneath our feet—our plantar fascia—can result in the characteristic symptom of plantar fasciitis: heel pain.

Achilles tendonitis is a common overuse injury that occurs when the Achilles tendon—which attaches our heel bone to our calf muscle—works beyond its strength, resulting in inflammation of the tendon.

Heel fat pad degradation is especially common in older adults. Our feet have a natural cushioning system, called the heel’s fat pad. This layer of padding helps protect our heel bone from impact. Without the proper footwear support, the heel bone has little protection from hard, unforgiving surfaces, leading to a loss of the fat pad over time.

Effective Ways to Reduce Heel Pain
